Meet the Staff
Ms. Pavalko, Assistant Principal/School Counselor
Sue Pavalko has been in education for 11 years. Her first five years were at Youngstown Community School as a K-6 Intervention Specialist. In 2013, she was hired to work for the Mahoning County Educational Service Center in the PACE program, where she was an Intervention Specialist for three years. Two years ago, Ms. Pavalko joined the Mahoning Unlimited Classroom team as an Intervention Specialist. This is her first year in her new position as School Counselor with MUC. Ms. Pavalko graduated with her Bachelor of Arts and Masters in Education degrees from Youngstown State University. She has lived in the Youngstown area her entire life. She has one daughter, who is in elementary school.
Mrs. Schiavello, DASL SecretaryDarlene Schiavello has been a secretary for the Mahoning Unlimited Classroom since 2005. Prior to coming to MCESC, she was a secretary for the IBM Corporation followed by 16 years with the Poland School District as secretary of Special Services.Mrs. Schiavello and her husband have three daughters, eight grandchildren, and two goldendoodles.
Ms. Berkowicz, Data Secretary
Nicole has been with the Unlimited Classroom since 2016 with the focus on attendance. In the past, she worked for local attorneys. Nicole earned her Psychology/Criminal Justice Bachelor's of Science Degree from Northern Arizona University.Nicole has 2 sons and 1 daughter.
Mrs. Christy, Intervention Specialist
Mrs. Gina Christy is very excited to be starting her new position for the 2018-19 school year as an intervention specialist for Mahoning Unlimited Classroom She has been teaching for 15 years. She received her undergrad from Youngstown State University and her Master’s Degree from Kent State University in early childhood education. She taught kindergarten for two years and then preschool for six years. Mrs. Christy then taught at Buckeye Online School in East Liverpool, Ohio as an intervention specialist for four and a half years and obtained her master’s degree in K-12 special education.
Mrs. Christy and her husband have two children. Her son, Devin is 10 and is going into 5th grade and her daughter, Delaney is 13 and is going into 8th grade.
Mrs. Rutana, Intervention Specialist
Mrs. Stacy Rutana has been in education for 25 years. She has taught every grade from preschool through twelfth grade in a variety of settings. Mrs. Rutana has worked for the Mahoning County Educational Service Center since 1996, where she has worked in many locations throughout the county. Most recently, she has taught in the alternative education department in residential facilities, Mahoning County High School, and the Unlimited Classroom. Mrs. Rutana earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania, a special education license from Youngstown State University in Ohio, and a Masters Degree in Special Education from Arkansas University. Mrs. Rutana loves to travel with her family, which includes her husband and three children.
Mrs. Rutana loves working with students of all ages looks forward to beginning a new school year!
Mrs. Miller, Math Teacher
Mrs. Kathy Miller has been teaching since 1995. Her first teaching job was in the Springfield Local School District. After 10 years of teaching in the classrooms at Springfield, she made the move to becoming an online teacher with Mahoning Unlimited Classroom. She received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Youngstown State University.
Mrs. Miller and her husband have three sons.
Mrs. Cartwright, ELA Teacher
Mrs. Alice Cartwright is thrilled to be returning to Mahoning Unlimited Classroom after completing her first year with us. She has been teaching for 12 years. She received her undergraduate degree from Westminster College and her Master’s in Literacy was completed at Youngstown State University. Her teaching experience includes years of teaching at Ohio Virtual Academy, Brookfield after school program through Youngstown State University, Stambaugh Academy in Youngstown, and various literacy graduate courses at Youngstown State University.
Mrs. Cartwright lives in Poland with her husband, two sons, and daughter. Her children are all in college. She has two cats and a dog.
Mrs. Remick, Science TeacherMrs. Jennifer Remick has been in education since 1992. She has traveled the globe and landed back in Ohio in 1997. Early in her career she taught in Springfield Local and Beaver Local School Districts. She transitioned to administration with the Diocese of Youngstown from 2003-2015. She re-entered the teaching field in 2015 here at MUC. Mrs. Remick's undergraduate education is from Southeastern Academy in Florida and Youngstown State University. She has attended Master's programs from Walsh University and Loyola University-New Orleans.Mrs. Remick, her husband, two daughters, and one fur-Son live in Poland. Mr. Lucente, Social Stuides Teacher
Tony Lucente has been in the education field for seven years. Mr. Lucente has spent time at Youngstown City Schools, Austintown schools, and Mahoning County Career and Technical Center as a Social Studies Teacher. Currently Mr. Lucente will be beginning his fourth school year working for the Mahoning Unlimited Classroom as a Social Studies teacher for grades 7-12. Mr. Lucente also the lead for MUC's Adult 22+ program. Mr. Lucente graduated from Youngstown State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education focused on Integrated Social Studies.
Mr. Lucente and his wife live in Struthers where his fifth grade step daughter attends school.
Mr. Palmer, Technology
Michael Palmer began his career with MCESC in the winter of 2017. Prior to his employment at MCESC, Michael worked as a Systems Administrator for Roth a Sodexo company, where he oversaw servers as well as managed and maintained the telecommunications system. Michael obtained his Bachelor of Science in Technology Degree from Youngstown State University in 2012 and is currently a VMware Certified Professional in Data Center Virtualization.
Michael and his wife really (REALLY) enjoy visiting National Parks and encourage others to do the same.
